The superhero genre has proven itself incredibly diverse and versatile, exploring everything from cosmic saviors like Superman to demonic heroes like Hellboy. However, audiences can sometimes struggle to relate to those heroes, instead gravitating to superheroes with no powers at all. Sometimes, the stories with the highest stakes, the best sense of adventure, and the most engaging plots focus on protagonists who rely on intelligence, technology, and skill to save the day.
From Marvel to DC and everything in between, the comic book medium has given Hollywood decades of source material to choose from when it comes to good, powerless heroes. While not all of these movies land at the box office, they can still offer a fun experience for the audience. Whether animated or live-action, based on a comic or completely original, sometimes superheroes are at their best when they don't have cosmic superpowers to fall back on.
10 The Rocketeer Is Pure Escapism
Based on Dave Stevens' pulp hero of the same name, The Rocketeer takes place during the 1930s and focuses on stunt pilot Cliff Secord. When he discovers a lost prototype jetpack, he decides to use its potential to become a local hero, soaring around the skies of Los Angeles to take on criminals. When he stumbles upon an international Nazi conspiracy, however, he paints a target on his own back, as well as his aspiring actress girlfriend.
The Rocketeer embraces the spirit of the Golden Age brilliantly, channeling the old action serials that inspired Stevens in the first place. Here, audiences are given a gangster movie, espionage thriller, romance, and '30s adventure story all in one. Aimed squarely at kids, the film nails the optimistic escapism that makes superhero cinema great and has remained a cult classic ever since.

9 Phantom Honored Lee Falk's Creation

In 1933, Lee Falk introduced one of comics' first-ever costumed superheroes the Phantom, protector of the fictional African country Bengalla. In 1996, Billy Zane brought the pulp hero to life in a 1930s adventure, one that follows him taking on a crime syndicate and the dastardly Singh Brotherhood. However, in a decade that had seen the superhero genre defined by Tim Burton's Batman movies, its lighter tone and campy visuals struggled to make a splash.

10 Superhero Movies That Failed To Live Up To Their Hype
Comic book blockbuster movies like Green Lantern and X-Men Apocalypse couldn't live up to their brilliant marketing strategy.
The Phantom is effectively a blend of Indiana Jones and Batman, serving as both a treasure hunt adventure and action story at once. Zane's performance as the hero continues to be one of the most underrated parts of '90s cinema, and the film deserves praise for being a faithful adaptation of Falk's stories. If anything, its bright visuals and focus on adventure make it a refreshing contrast to its contemporaries.

8 The Punisher Took Action To Extremes

The face of hard-boiled action comics, The Punisher tells the story of Frank Castle as he trades his job as an FBI agent for a lethal vigilante on his quest for revenge over the murder of his family. Targeting a ruthless criminal businessman, he tears his way through everyone involved, becoming the definition of the one-man army trope.
While the Punisher isn't technically a "superhero," his origins in the Marvel Universe coupled with his unparalleled tenacity make him an icon of the genre all the same. Thomas Jane did a great job in bringing the antihero to life, and the inclusion of John Travolta gave the film a villain they could love to hate -- nailing the appeal of the comics to begin with.

7 Kick-Ass Is An Action-Driven Teen Comedy

Based on Mark Millar and John Romita Jr's comic of the same name, Kick-Ass tells the story of a teen, Dave Lizewski, as he decides to try his hand at being a superhero. Donning a costume, he bumbles his way through trying to prevent crime, eventually meeting a father/daughter team of vigilantes, Big Daddy and Hit-Girl. When they draw the ire of a local crime lord, the trio are forced to fight for their lives.
Kick-Ass is one of the best cases of genre deconstruction there is, grounding the idea of superheroes as a ridiculous idea that only works here because of training and resources. By himself, Dave doesn't stand a chance as a serious crime-fighter, instead relying on Hit-Girl's arsenal to beat the villain. A great entry point to Millar's style of superheroes, the film is a great comedy, action, and crime movie.

6 The Mask of Zorro Channels Hollywood's Swashbuckling Heyday

Based on Johnston McCulley's genre-defining hero, The Mask of Zorro begins when the original hero, Don Diego de la Vega, is imprisoned by his rival, Don Rafael. After seeing his wife killed and his daughter stolen, he languishes in prison for twenty years, eventually seizing an opportunity to escape. Plotting his revenge, he takes a young thief, Alejandro Murrieta, under his wing, training him into a worthy successor to his mantle.

Honoring the heyday of swashbuckling adventure, The Mask of Zorro is a riveting action-revenge story that offers all-ages adventure in a Western setting. From the outset, Antonio Banderas endeared himself to a generation, and the film's use of stars like Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta-Jones made it all the more memorable. As one of the few successful uses of the passing-of-the-torch trope, the movie nails its genre and hero, keeping the audience engaged in both Zorros' arcs.

5 The Dark Knight Returns Shows Why Frank Miller Is Iconic
In 1986, Frank Miller effectively changed the direction of Batman comics forever through his seminal miniseries The Dark Knight Returns. After almost three decades, his story was given a two-part animated movie, following The Dark Knight's war against the Mutant crime gang and final showdown with Superman. As both a deconstruction of the superhero mythos and a love letter to everything great about Batman, the movie gave Bruce his "old man" send-off.
While Superman does make an appearance, his inclusion as an antagonist only serves to remind the audience of how skilled a hero Batman truly is despite his lack of powers. Instead, he relies on his strategic mind, kryptonite, technology, and strength to overcome every challenge that's thrown his way. By the end of the film, it's not hard to see why Miller's graphic novel is considered the classic it is.

4 The Batman Is DC Meets Se7en

When news broke that Robert Pattinson had been cast as DC's Caped Crusader, audiences were skeptical. When The Batman was finally released, those concerns evaporated overnight as the star turned into one of the grittiest superhero movies of the last two decades. Focusing on the Dark Knight investigating a slew of murders committed by the Riddler, the film channeled classic '90s thrillers like Se7en to bring audiences a psychologically driven take on the hero.
The Batman is as much a murder mystery as it is a superhero movie, proving the genre is at its best when it offers character depth and an intriguing plot. With a stacked cast that includes Jeffrey Wright, Colin Farrell and Zoë Kravitz, the movie carves out its own unique version of Gotham City, blending film Noir with Scorsese-style crime. Playing on the hero's detective skills in a way most of his films don't, Matt Reeves gave audiences the best Batman movie since 2008.

3 The MCU Owes It All To Iron Man

After having licensed some of their best heroes to other companies, Marvel Studios embarked on one of the most ambitious journeys in Hollywood history by launching the MCU. That started with 2008's Iron Man, which gave Robert Downey Jr a career rebirth with the role of Tony Stark. Telling his origin story as the titular hero, it follows him as he uses his ingenuity to break free of terrorist captivity and channel his intelligence for good -- beginning with a super suit.

Much of Marvel's hopes rested on the success of Iron Man, and that gamble more than paid off. Audiences embraced Downey Jr's depiction of Tony Stark as a cocky but brilliant billionaire, one who proves that even in a world of super soldiers and cosmic entities, a normal man can become a hero. Ever since, both the hero and the film have been something of the crowning jewel in the MCU -- despite not a single character in the movie having a superpower.

2 Darkman Continued Sam Raimi's Success

Sam Raimi may be best thought of for his Spider-Man trilogy and Evil Dead franchise, but one of his best movies was 1990's Darkman. Casting Liam Neeson in the role of a vengeful scientist hunting the men who almost murdered him, leaving him horribly burned, it stands out as one of the darkest superhero stories there is. With a hero who can use his technology to imitate anyone he chooses -- for an hour at a time -- it gave the genre a unique, fresh premise.
Darkman is practically a modern-day Universal Monsters movie, combining elements of pulpy crime-fighters, science fiction, and Gothic horror into a glorious revenge flick. For people who want to see the darker side of the superhero genre, this movie is mandated viewing and gave Liam Neeson one of his greatest films.

1 The Dark Knight Trilogy Rebuilt Batman's Reputation
In 2005, Christopher Nolan revived Batman's image on the big screen following the disastrous Batman & Robin movie in 1998. Casting Christian Bale as the hero, the trilogy follows the origin and training of Bruce Wayne as he steps in to save Gotham from Ra's al Ghul. As great as Batman Begins was, it was improved in almost every way by 2008's The Dark Knight, which pits the Caped Crusader against Joker in a war for Gotham's soul.
The Dark Knight trilogy showed audiences that superhero movies didn't need to be campy or full of CGI, with Nolan taking a serious approach, treating the story like a crime thriller. In grounding key DC villains like Bane, Scarecrow, and Joker, the movies contributed immensely to the improved respect for superhero cinema -- and undoubtedly even paved the way for Marvel's revival. The trilogy explores the philosophy of characters like Batman to great effect, using the genre to ask questions about freedom, security, and ethics.
